Writing is not a one-step process. It has many actions but the measures actually phases are recursive. You begin to write and then you decide you will need to do some extra research. Then you write some more and decide you will need to start fixing some of your writing, then. Well. You know how this goes. Generally speaking, this is an ineffective and fairly unproductive way to get your writing done. Allow me to share five strategies to help you be more effective in your writing process, especially focusing on the editing and revising portions. Note although editing and revising are somewhat different elements, we will consider them together for this article especially as they are different from the ‘creating/composing’ section of writing. Separate editing and composing. Both of these processes use different parts of our minds and once we attempt to write and then edit what we have written and then write some more and edit that, we wind up generating very little and we feel frustrated with the total procedure. Keep both of these phases separated.
It is Remarkable How we can catch mistakes and other issues in our writing when we read it out loud. So during your editing/revising time, just read what you have written out loud. Read backwards. When you are doing copy editing and in particular searching for typos or other misspellings, begin at the end of your document and browse ahead. You cannot build any momentum this way because the syntax is not helping. You have the ability to just concentrate on copy editing spelling, punctuation, etc… Do not use words you cannot define. Since I have taught elementary school, high school, undergraduates, and graduate students and also help professors with their writing, I understand that most of us have a desire to sound smart. Let us agree that we are smart. After that, let’s be smart about using words that we know the significance for. We run the danger of using a word incorrectly no thinking about its connotation, by way of instance if we are not truly knowledgeable about the term and what it means.
So, keep expanding your vocabulary, but be cautious about using words in your writing that you can’t easily define. how to copyright your book and revising parts, ask yourself whether you are able to define all the words you have used. If the answer is no, then remove them and find options. Separate editing and composing. I know I said this one before but I must mention it again and what is a copy editor. So many writers aren’t tapping into their brains economically. You want to have times or times which are only for composing. You create ideas and just go with the flow, not quitting or fixing. Then, you have got other times where you are editing and revising. Start getting in this habit now.
